THE LEADING SOCIETY FOR
PROFESSIONAL ESTIMATORS Message from the Chapter President The past two years have been difficult ones for all aspects of our economy. At no point in my thirty year construction career has an economic downturn had such a lasting effect on our industry. Many predict the downturn we are experiencing will last two to three more years before we return to some sense of “normalcy”. Some are calling what we are experiencing now the “new normal”. Whatever the case may be for the future of construction one thing is for certain regarding the present: today is a challenging time for estimating professionals. The challenge is not only acquiring profitable work for our respective companies but doing so while remaining true to the ethical standards established by the American Society of Professional estimators. Economic downturns also pose a challenge for professional organizations such as the ASPE: namely retaining our membership. While companies and their employees have had to find ways to cut back on costs, many have found professional memberships to be an easy target for elimination. In some cases, individuals simply doubt their ability to be able to participate in a meaningful way due to the increased demands of their jobs. I urge all of those companies and individuals that have chosen to opt out of ASPE membership to rethink their positions. For those companies or individuals that are on the fence about joining for the first time I implore you to take that step forward. I can not think of a better time than the times that we are in to be members and active participants in professional organizations related to our jobs. In times of doing more with less, our attention becomes so focused on the singular task of acquiring work that we essentially put the blinders on and allow so much to pass us by. Organizations such as the ASPE provide us with an opportunity to step out of our day to day worlds and explore our industry from a broader perspective. There is so much that we can learn from the relationships that we establish with our piers in the industry whether from within our respective chapters or from those whom we invite to speak to us about new methods and trends that will affect us all. In the year ahead, we will be focusing on other ways to communicate in a more interactive way with our membership. We will also be exploring new ways to educate and broaden the horizons of those who attend our monthly meetings. Most importantly, we want make sure that whatever we do is fun and a welcome release from the day to day grind. As always, we welcome the suggestions of our constituents on ways that we can better serve the individual, our profession, and our industry and we look forward to seeing and interacting with each of you. Respectfully Yours, Lou Liberti – President ASPE – DE Chapter 75
The Chapter would also like to congratulate the following members: The 2009-2010 award for “Estimator of the Year” was won by Rob Anderson for his leadership and contributions to the success of our Society.
